When things don't go to plan!

Have you ever had one of those days when your cycling morning  just doesn't go to plan.
Today was one of those days.

4.30am - Alarm goes off. Bounce out of bed, more like a fall out of bed, but hey I got up. Get my stuff together, and head off for a 5.15 am meet at the Regatta Hotel. Rain is forecast but that's okay, we've got this.
5.15am - Where's Margo? Contemplating, well I'm here anyway I'll just go on my own. A quick message or two. She's slept in. Give her 15 min and she's on her way. Phew, I don't have to ride on my own
6.00 am - All sorted, we are ready to go.

Oh Dear !!!!! ..... we have a flat tyre.
In reality - oh  #1##@!

Ok, stay calm, we as independent women have got this and we can change this tyre. (Quietly thinking we should have paid more attention at that bicycle maintenance class)

It's okay, we've got this.

We do somehow manage to get the back wheel off.
Tools out, get the tube out and reach for the other tube. This doesn't look quite right. Wrong Tube, it's too big for the wheel.  It's okay, I've got one that looks like it's the right size as we really have no idea what we are doing. Tube in and now to pump it up. My canister is almost out of gas so it's over to the pump. Pumping a tyre up with a small pump is quite a task but we got it. Wheel back on, we are now covered in grease but we are ready to roll.

Big High Fives to us

6.30am - yes it took us half an hour to change a tyre, but we did it on our own. Big high fives to us. Ready to roll out, no gloves, who knows where they are, we'd forget our heads if they weren't screwed on. At this stage we've given up on the big ride and decided on a photo session.

What advice would you give to others when they have a flat tyre?

Give it a go and don't worry about making mistakes. Make sure you carry the right tube and equipment so you can do it yourself.

I'm not really sure I am model material. Does anyone want to give me some lessons?

Time for coffee!

What's a bit of grease between friends.

Lessons Learnt

  • pay attention in class
  • take each day as it comes
  • enjoy the moment
  • it's not about how far you ride, it's about the company
  • Have fun

P.S. We did find the gloves on the back of the car and we did have a fun morning
