They are recreational riders, touring cyclists, e-bike riders, commuters and women setting off on their very first ride.
Some are cycling long distances. Others are riding to the café, exploring a rail trail or taking their bikes on holiday.
What they share is a desire to feel comfortable and like themselves.
That is why we design cycling clothing that balances function with softness, performance with practicality, and comfort with style.
How Birds on Bikes began
Birds on Bikes was founded by Brisbane designer Barbara Spooner after she started cycling with her now husband.
As a size 14 and a new rider, Barbara found it surprisingly difficult to find cycling clothing that felt comfortable, flattering or stylish. Much of what was available made her feel squeezed and self-conscious—“like a sausage”—rather than confident and ready to ride.
She wanted clothing that supported her body without making her feel restricted. Clothing that looked good, felt good and allowed her to focus on the experience rather than what she was wearing.
After struggling to find it, Barbara had a simple thought:
“How hard can this be?”
That thought became Birds on Bikes.
Hi, I'm Barbara
I founded Birds on Bikes in 2017 after becoming frustrated with the limited cycling clothing available for women like me.
I wanted padded cycling pants that were comfortable, flattering and practical — without low waistbands, awkward seams or the feeling that I needed to look like an athlete before I was allowed to wear them.
What began as a search for something better became a brand built around listening to women and designing for the way they actually ride.

The journey ahead
Birds on Bikes is continuing to grow beyond traditional cycling apparel.
Many of our customers travel with their bikes, join cycling tours or build riding into their holidays. In the new year, we will begin introducing a lifestyle range for the travelling cyclist, with comfortable pieces designed to work both on and off the bike.
The vision is a practical, coordinated wardrobe for women who want to ride, travel, explore and feel good along the way.
