Made Thoughtfully

Better Choices, Made Close to Home

Birds on Bikes creates women’s cycling clothing in small quantities, with a focus on local production, durable design and making only what is genuinely needed.

Sustainability is not one perfect answer

For us, it means making considered choices at every stage.

It means producing locally where we can, avoiding unnecessary overproduction, choosing durable fabrics and designing clothing that can be worn ride after ride.

We are still learning and improving, but we would rather be honest about the work than make vague promises.

Close to the people who make it

Much of our range is cut and sewn in our Brisbane studio.

Local production gives us greater visibility over how garments are made, helps support Australian jobs and allows us to respond to real customer demand rather than producing large quantities in advance.

Making what is needed

We use a mix of small-batch and made-to-order production.

This helps us reduce excess finished stock and gives customers access to a wider range of styles and sizes without requiring us to manufacture every variation in advance.

Made-to-order pieces enter our production schedule after purchase, while selected finished styles are available through our Ready-to-Send collection.

Fewer pieces, more rides

Our clothing is designed for repeated wear, with practical construction and performance fabrics selected for comfort, movement and durability.

Features such as supportive waistbands, reinforced construction, useful pockets and a seamless inside leg are designed to make each garment more comfortable and useful over time.

We believe the most sustainable piece of clothing is often the one you continue to wear.

Better materials where they make sense

Selected Birds on Bikes garments are made using recycled fibres, including fabrics containing recycled polyester.

We choose materials based on performance, comfort, durability and suitability for cycling—not simply because they carry a particular label.

Material details are listed on individual product pages so you can see exactly what each garment is made from.

Practical packaging, carefully considered

We aim to use packaging that protects your order without adding unnecessary bulk.

We continue to review our packaging, shipping and studio processes as better practical options become available.

Avoid claiming that all packaging is recyclable or plastic-free unless that is true across every order.

What sustainability means to us

Producing close to home gives us more oversight and supports local skills and employment.

Small-batch and made-to-order production helps reduce unnecessary finished stock.

We prioritise comfort, practical design and durability so garments stay useful for longer.

We do not claim to have solved every environmental challenge. We are committed to making better, more informed choices as the business grows.

We consider performance, comfort, durability and fibre content when selecting fabrics, using recycled materials where they are genuinely suitable for the garment.

Through collections such as Design Finds, we look for practical ways to keep good clothing in use rather than allowing wearable pieces to become waste.

A note from Barbara

Birds on Bikes began with a simple aim: to make cycling clothing that women genuinely wanted to wear.

As the business has grown, I have become increasingly conscious of how much clothing is produced, how quickly it is discarded and how difficult it can be for small brands to balance performance, affordability and responsible production.

We will not always have the perfect solution, but we can make thoughtful choices, remain transparent and keep improving.

Made to be worn and worn well

At Birds on Bikes, sustainability is closely tied to how a garment performs over time. We want the pieces you choose to support your rides again and again, whether that’s through comfort in the saddle, durable construction or fabrics chosen for long-term wear.

That is why quality, longevity and thoughtful local production remain at the centre of how we do things.
