Women’s Cycling Chamois: Finding the Right Padding for Your Ride

The chamois is one of the most important parts of a pair of padded cycling pants — but more padding doesn’t automatically mean more comfort.

At Birds on Bikes, we use two different women-specific chamois depending on how the garment is designed to be worn. Our traditional padded cycling pants use the Volcan Evo 3 Women chamois, while our padded cycling Unders use a slimmer, lower-profile chamois designed to sit comfortably beneath everyday clothing.

The right choice comes down to how you ride and what you want to wear on the bike.

Which Padding Is Right for You?

Choose our padded cycling knicks when:

You prefer traditional padded cycling shorts, pants or bibs and want more substantial support for time in the saddle.

It's our choice for riders heading out on rail trails, recreational rides, fitness rides, touring adventures and longer days on the bike.

Choose BoB Unders when:

You want to wear your own shorts, pants or everyday clothes over your cycling padding.

The slimmer profile makes it particularly suited to commuting, e-bike adventures, casual cycling, touring and travelling when versatility matters.

Still unsure? Contact us and we’ll help you choose the right option for your ride.

Is a Thicker Chamois Better?

Not necessarily.

Chamois comfort isn't simply about thickness. The pad needs to sit in the right position, support the areas under pressure and remain stable as you pedal.

An excessively bulky chamois can sometimes create pressure or rubbing rather than reducing it.

That's why we use different chamois for different garments: the padding should suit the way the garment is worn and the type of riding it's designed for.

How Should a Chamois Fit?

A cycling chamois should sit close against your body and stay securely in place while you ride.

Traditional padded cycling pants are designed to be worn without underwear underneath. Extra fabric between your skin and the chamois can bunch, retain moisture and create additional friction.

Your cycling pants should feel comfortably close-fitting so the chamois stays where it is designed to provide support.

Comfort Is Personal

Every rider is different.

Your body shape, saddle, riding position, bike setup, time in the saddle and personal preference can all affect how a chamois feels.

That's why we don't believe there is one perfect pad for every woman or every kind of ride.

Instead, we choose padding to suit the way each Birds on Bikes garment is intended to be worn — giving you the freedom to choose the option that works best for the way you ride.
