Understanding Your Cycling Chamois

What Is a Cycling Chamois?

A cycling chamois is the shaped pad sewn inside padded cycling pants, shorts or underwear. It helps cushion pressure points, manage moisture and reduce friction between your body and the saddle.

A good chamois should feel supportive without being unnecessarily bulky, and it should remain securely positioned while you ride.

Different Rides Need Different Padding

Our padded cycling knicks and BoB Unders are designed for different purposes, so they do not use the same chamois.

Our traditional padded knicks need supportive cushioning for recreational rides, touring and longer periods in the saddle.

BoB Unders are designed to sit discreetly beneath everyday clothing, so they use a lighter-profile chamois suited to casual riding, commuting and travel.

Rather than using one pad across every product, we choose the chamois that best suits how each garment will be worn.

In Our Padded Knicks: Volcan Evo 3 Women

Our padded cycling pants and tights use the Elastic Interface® Volcan Evo 3 Women, a women-specific cycling chamois selected for its balance of support, breathability and flexibility.

It provides cushioning where women typically experience pressure while remaining light enough to move naturally with the body.

This chamois is used across our traditional padded knicks designed for recreational riding, rail trails, touring, e-bike adventures and longer days on the bike.

Women-Specific Shape

Designed to support female anatomy and common saddle-contact areas.

Breathable Support

Provides cushioning without excessive thickness or stiffness.

Made to Move

Works with the close fit of the garment to remain stable while pedalling.

In Our BoB Unders: Discreet Padding for Everyday Clothing

BoB Unders are designed to be worn beneath skirts, dresses, loose shorts, trousers and activewear.

Because they need to remain discreet under clothing, they use a different women-specific chamois with a lighter profile than our traditional cycling knicks.

The aim is to provide useful saddle comfort while maintaining flexibility and versatility both on and off the bike.

Lower-Profile Feel

Designed to be less noticeable beneath everyday clothing.

Everyday Versatility

Ideal for sightseeing, commuting, travel and shorter recreational rides.

On-and-Off-Bike Comfort

Created for days when cycling is part of the journey rather than the entire day.

Fit Matters Just as Much as the Padding

Even a premium chamois will not perform properly if the garment is too loose.

Your cycling pants or Unders should fit closely enough to hold the pad securely against your body. This helps prevent movement, folding and bunching while you ride.

The fit should feel supportive, but not painfully tight.

Why a Chamois Can Feel Different When Standing

Cycling padding is shaped for a seated riding position.

It may feel more noticeable while standing or walking than it does once you are sitting on the saddle. This is normal, particularly with the more structured chamois used in traditional cycling knicks.

The best way to assess a chamois is in a riding position rather than only while standing in front of a mirror.

Do You Wear Underwear Under a Chamois?

Padded cycling garments are generally designed to be worn directly against the skin.

Underwear can introduce additional seams, folds and fabric, which may increase friction or interfere with moisture management.

For the most comfortable result, wear padded knicks or BoB Unders without another layer of underwear beneath them.
