Caring for Your Cycling Apparel – Extend the Life of Your Gear

Investing in high-quality, sustainable cycling gear from Birds on Bikes means you’ll want to keep it performing and looking its best. Our eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production practices are designed to create gear that lasts, and with the right care, you can extend the life of your favourite pieces while respecting the planet. Here’s your Love & Care Guide to help you make the most of your cycling gear.

1. Separate for Protection

Cycling gear requires a little extra attention in the laundry to prevent snags and wear. Before washing, zip up zippers and fasten any hook-and-loop closures to avoid catching on other clothes. For sublimated gear, turn it inside out to protect the colours and graphics. If you’re washing gloves with Velcro, remember to close the tabs—they can attach to other items and cause damage.

2. Use a Gentle Machine Wash

Cycling apparel is made with performance fabrics that thrive on a delicate or gentle wash setting. For added protection, place your gear in a laundry bag. Always wash soiled clothing promptly, as leaving sweat in fabrics can degrade the fibres over time, impacting both comfort and longevity.

3. Keep Water Temperature Cool

Our fabrics are chosen for their quality and durability, but they still benefit from a gentle touch. Use cool water—below 30°C—with a mild, high-quality detergent. Avoid softeners and bleach, as they can weaken colours and compromise chamois padding, reducing the support and durability of your gear.

4. Line Dry for Best Results

Air drying is the way to go. Hang your clothing in a well-ventilated area, with chamois-side out for padded items, as fresh air helps reduce bacteria build-up. Skip the dryer entirely; it’s the fastest way to damage your investment, as heat breaks down stretch fabrics. Fortunately, our high-performance materials dry quickly, so your gear will be ready for your next ride in no time.

5. Special Care for Chamois

Our chamois padding is low-maintenance, but to keep it fresh, always wash your Knicks after each ride. The chamois is prone to bacteria build-up, so avoid the temptation to wear it more than once between washes.

By following these care tips, you’re helping to preserve the quality, comfort, and longevity of your Birds on Bikes apparel. Small steps like mindful washing and gentle drying support our mission for eco-friendly cycling wear that lasts, while keeping your gear ready for every adventure.
