What is a Chamois?
A cycling chamois is the soft, multi‑density, antibacterial pad sewn into women’s padded bike shorts, bibs and tights. It cushions sit bones, reduces pressure and road buzz, and helps prevent chafing by wicking sweat and minimising seams. Wear it next to skin—no underwear—for comfort and hygiene. Birds on Bikes uses premium Elastic Interface® women‑specific chamois across sizes AU 6–24.
Why is it called a “chamois”?
The name comes from early cycling when riders used natural chamois leather as a soft lining. Modern chamois pads are engineered textiles, combining perforated foams, women‑specific shaping, and antimicrobial top fabrics—far more breathable and supportive than leather ever was.

Elastic Interface
What does a chamois actually do?
Pressure relief: Strategically placed foam supports your sit bones and soft tissue.
Vibration damping: Multi‑density foam reduces road buzz to keep you fresher longer.
Moisture management: Wicking top fabric keeps sweat away from skin to reduce friction.
Chafe prevention: Minimal seams and a smooth surface help prevent rubbing.

Should I wear underwear with a chamois?
No. Underwear adds seams and holds moisture, which can cause chafing. Wear your padded shorts/bibs next to skin. After riding, change out of them promptly and wash between wears.
FIT TIPS
How should padded bike shorts fit?
A good fit is snug, not tight. The pad should sit directly under your sit bones—no folding or wandering.
Size selection:
Choose your usual clothing size; if between sizes, most riders prefer the smaller for secure support.
Length & rise:
Check leg length and rise. Birds on Bikes offers multiple leg lengths and a higher, comfortable waistband for tummy support.
Bike-pose test:
Do a quick “bike-pose” at home: bend forward—if the pad stays in place, you’re set.
Caring for your chamois
- Wash after every ride on a gentle cycle (cold or warm) with mild detergent; avoid fabric softeners.
- Line‑dry out of direct sun.
- Replace when you notice thinning foam, persistent odour, or rubbing that didn’t used to happen.
Common issues & easy fixes
Chafing
Check short size; skip underwear; use a thin chamois cream if needed.
Numbness/pressure
Adjust saddle height/tilt; try a different short rise or pad density.
Pad movement
Size down or consider bib shorts for longer rides.
