Do I Need a Bib for Cycling?

If you’re serious about comfort on the bike, a bib short can be a game-changer. Unlike traditional bike shorts, bib shorts have built-in shoulder straps that hold everything in place — meaning no waistband digging in, no sliding down, and no adjusting mid-ride.

Bib shorts are especially popular for longer distances or multi-day rides because they provide consistent support and padding where you need it most. They’re also great if you prefer a high-rise fit and a smooth silhouette under your jersey.

While you don’t need a bib to ride, once you try one, there’s a good chance you’ll never go back. At Birds on Bikes, our womens bib shorts are designed with real riders in mind — combining comfort, performance, and a flattering, supportive fit in sizes 6–24.

Should You Size Up or Down in Cycling Bibs?

When it comes to cycling bibs, the fit should be firm but not restrictive — like a gentle hug that moves with you. If you're between sizes, we generally recommend sizing down rather than sizing up. A well-fitting bib should feel snug to keep the chamois padding in place and prevent friction or bunching while you ride.

That said, every body is different. If you prefer a more relaxed fit or are on the upper end of a size range, you might feel more comfortable sizing up — especially if you're new to bibs. Birds on Bikes bib shorts are made with high-stretch, supportive fabrics and come in sizes 6 to 24, so you can find the fit that feels just right for you.

Still unsure? Get in touch or come in for a fitting — we’re here to help you ride comfortably and confidently.

Should you wear anything under cycling bibs?

Nope — and in fact, you shouldn’t! Cycling bibs (and bike shorts) are designed to be worn without underwear. The built-in chamois padding is made to sit directly against your skin to reduce friction, prevent chafing, and wick away moisture.

Wearing underwear underneath can cause bunching, rubbing, and discomfort, especially on longer rides. The technical fabrics used in Birds on Bikes bibs are breathable, antibacterial, and designed to keep you dry — so you can ride comfortably and confidently, commando-style.

It might feel unusual at first, but trust us — once you try it, you’ll never go back.
