Cycling Without Lycra: Wear What Makes You Feel Good
Somewhere along the way, cycling became a little bit serious.
The matching jerseys, the aerodynamic helmets, the fancy bikes, the clip-in shoes and the endless conversations about speed, watts and kilometres.
And don't get me wrong, there's absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. If that's your thing, fantastic!
But what about the rest of us?
The women who just want to jump on their bikes, enjoy some fresh air, explore a rail trail, meet friends for coffee or simply get out and move their bodies?
For many women, cycling without Lycra is much more appealing than dressing head to toe in traditional cycling gear.
We want to feel comfortable, confident and free to enjoy the ride, without feeling like we have to look a certain way.
Because you don't have to look like a cyclist to be one.
Cycling Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
One of the things I love about cycling is that it can be whatever you want it to be.
It might be a leisurely Sunday ride along the river, an afternoon exploring somewhere new, a weekend away with your bike or just a quick trip to the shops.
You don't need to ride 100 kilometres. You don't need to keep up with anyone. And you certainly don't need to worry about whether you look the part.
A bike, a comfortable seat (well, hopefully!) and a sense of adventure are a pretty good start.
And yes, stopping for coffee and cake absolutely counts as cycling.
There's something wonderful about getting out on your bike with no particular destination in mind. No pressure to beat yesterday's time or clock up a certain number of kilometres.
Just you, your bike and whatever the day brings.
Sometimes those are the best rides of all.
Cycling Without Lycra: Wear What Makes You Feel Good
Here's something I hear from women all the time.
They love riding their bikes, but they're not particularly keen on squeezing into traditional cycling gear.
And I understand that.
For a lot of women, especially those coming back to cycling after a few years away, the idea of wearing tight Lycra can be more intimidating than actually getting on the bike.
But cycling without Lycra doesn't mean you have to put up with discomfort.
You can wear your favourite shorts, a relaxed T-shirt or whatever makes you feel good, while still having the benefit of proper cycling padding.
That's actually one of the reasons we created our Birds on Bikes Urban Unders.
They're padded cycling underwear designed to be worn underneath your everyday clothes.
So whether you're heading out in shorts, a skirt or something a little more relaxed, you can enjoy the comfort of a cycling chamois without feeling like you need the full cycling kit.
It's about giving women more choice.
Because the best cycling outfit is the one that makes you want to get on your bike.
A Sore Backside Shouldn't Be Part of the Adventure
Now, let's talk about something that doesn't get enough attention.
Your backside!
If you've ever headed out for what was supposed to be a lovely bike ride, only to spend the last half wishing you could get off the saddle, you'll know exactly what I mean.
A little discomfort can turn an enjoyable ride into something you'd rather forget.
And it's often one of the reasons women decide cycling isn't for them.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
A good cycling chamois can make a real difference to your comfort by providing cushioning and helping reduce friction between your body and the saddle.
That doesn't mean you need to dress like you're competing in the Tour de France.
Padded cycling underwear can be worn discreetly beneath your own clothes, making it a practical option for casual rides, commuting, touring and e-bike adventures.
Of course, padding is only part of the picture. A correctly fitted bike, a suitable saddle and clothing that doesn't bunch or rub all contribute to a more enjoyable ride.
Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference.
There's No Age Limit on Enjoying Your Bike
Something else I feel strongly about is that cycling isn't just for the young, super-fit or athletic.
There's a whole community of women discovering, or rediscovering, how much fun cycling can be later in life.
Maybe you rode everywhere when you were younger and haven't been on a bike for years.
Perhaps the kids have grown up and you've finally got a little more time for yourself.
Or maybe you've recently bought an e-bike and discovered a whole new world of possibilities.
Whatever brought you back to cycling, welcome!
You don't have to be particularly fit to start. You don't need expensive equipment or an impressive collection of cycling gear.
Start with a short ride somewhere safe and enjoyable, then build up as your confidence grows.
And if you're not comfortable riding with a group just yet, that's absolutely fine too.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying your own company and taking things at your own pace.
Cycling should add something lovely to your life, not become another thing you feel pressured to achieve.
Let's Hear It for the E-Bikes!
Can we also give e-bikes a little appreciation?
I think they're wonderful for making cycling accessible to more people.
They can help take some of the worry out of hills, longer distances and keeping up with friends who might ride a little faster.
And for women who haven't ridden for a while, they can be a fantastic way to rediscover the freedom of being on a bike.
You're still outside, moving your body, exploring new places and enjoying the ride.
Whether your bike has a motor or not doesn't change any of that.
And if an e-bike means you can ride further, tackle a beautiful rail trail or join your friends for an adventure you might otherwise have missed, how good is that?
There's room for every kind of bike in my book.
You Don't Need a Wardrobe Full of Cycling Gear
One of the nice things about casual cycling is that you can keep your wardrobe simple.
A breathable top, comfortable shorts or pants and footwear suitable for riding might be all you need for a relaxed outing, along with an appropriately fitted helmet and anything else needed for the conditions.
If you're cycling in everyday clothing, pay attention to anything that might catch in your chain or wheels, such as loose trouser legs or flowing fabric.
For longer rides, you might appreciate some extra comfort from padded underwear or cycling pants.
That's where having a few practical pieces makes life easier.
Our Urban Unders are ideal for women who prefer their own clothes, while our Essential Pocket Bike Pants are for those who enjoy the feel of dedicated cycling knicks.
We've designed our clothing with real women's bodies in mind because comfort shouldn't depend on fitting into someone else's idea of what a cyclist should look like.
High waists, practical pockets, different leg lengths and thoughtful fit are all about making your time on the bike more enjoyable.
You don't need everything. Just choose what works for you.
The Best Rides Aren't Always the Longest
Some of my favourite things about cycling have very little to do with the actual riding.
It's discovering a little café you didn't know existed.
💜 Stopping to admire a beautiful view.
💜 Chatting with someone along the way.
💜 Or coming home feeling like you've had a little adventure, even though you haven't travelled very far.
We're so often encouraged to measure everything. Our steps, our kilometres, our speed, our fitness.
But sometimes it's nice to do something simply because we enjoy it.
✅ You can ride five kilometres and have a wonderful morning.
✅ You can stop halfway through because you've found somewhere lovely to sit.
✅ You can walk up a hill if you feel like it.
✅ You can even decide that today is more about the coffee than the cycling.
There are no rules about how you have to enjoy your bike.
There's Room for All of Us on Two Wheels
At Birds on Bikes, I've always believed cycling should feel welcoming, not intimidating.
You don't need to fit a particular mould, be a certain dress size or look a certain way to belong.
Whether you're riding a road bike, a hybrid, an e-bike or that trusty old bicycle sitting in the shed, you're part of the cycling community.
And you deserve to feel comfortable while you're doing it.
That's why we're passionate about making cycling clothing that works for women of different shapes, sizes and riding styles.
Because feeling comfortable in what you're wearing can make all the difference between leaving the bike in the shed and heading out for another adventure.
Whether you love your Lycra or prefer cycling without Lycra in your favourite everyday clothes, there's room for everyone.
So wear what you love, ride at your own pace and don't forget to enjoy the scenery.
After all, the best kind of cyclist is a happy one.
Happy riding,
Barbara
